A guide to the Idaho Birding Trail
Produced by Idaho Department of Fish and Game's Nongame, Endangered, and Watchable Wildlife Program

135 pages
Full color throughout
8"x10" spiral-bound to lay flat

Birdwatchers, here it is: An information-packed guidebook to the statewide Idaho Birding Trail, with hours upon hours of birdwatching adventures described on nearly every page. Creating the trail was a four-year process, resulting in a 2,000-mile, self-guided, auto-driven tour through 175 premier birding sites. The guidebook is organized by region: Tree-covered mountains and glacial lakes in the North, snow-topped peaks and whitewater rivers in East-Central Idaho, foothills and forests in the Southwest, and sagebrush deserts in the Southeast.

Sites within each region are described in detail, with directions, suggestions on when to go and where to look, bird species to observe, maps and color photos. For example, the North Region includes specific information on:

  • Creston Valley Wildlife Managment Area
  • Boundary Creek Wildlife Management Area
  • Ball Creek Ranch
  • Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge
  • Myrtle Creek/Snow Creek Subloop
  • Perkins Lake
  • McArther Lake Wildlife Management Area
  • Oden Bay and Sunnyside Loop
  • Hope Subloop
  • Sandpoint City Beach and Waterlife Discovery Center
  • Morton Slough Game Management Area
  • Round Lake State Park
  • Westmond Lake
  • Kelso Lake and Hoodoo Valley
  • Priest Lake Area
  • Hanna Flats Cedar Grove
  • Priest River and Albeni Dam
  • Farragut State Park
And 30 more viewing areas in the northern region. Idaho's Southwest, East-Central and Southeast regions are covered in similar detail.

Amenities like parking, restrooms and campgrounds are also listed, as well as what kind of birds will be there each month. The book also includes birding ethics and a birds of Idaho field checklist. For birders in Idaho, this is possibly the most specific guidebook available.
