City hosts downtown open house
Discussion includes reconstruction of streets
SANDPOINT, ID--The City of Sandpoint will be holding a Public Open House to discuss the upcoming project which will revise the way traffic operates in Downtown Sandpoint and include the reconstruction of First and Cedar in the downtown area. The current one-way traffic on First Avenue, Cedar Street, Pine and Church streets will change from one-way to two-way traffic with diagonal and/or parallel parking on each block.
The revision also includes the removal of traffic signals at Second/Cedar; Pine/First; and Pine/Fifth. A new signal at Church and Fifth will be activated. The current date for the revision is the end of April 2017 after ITD finishes the Fifth Avenue project. The open house is scheduled for Thursday, January 19 from 4:30-6:30PM on the second-floor balcony of the Columbia Bank Building located at 414 Church Street in Sandpoint.
At the open house, the discussion will include the complete reconstruction of streets, sidewalks and streetscaping of Cedar Street and First Avenue, which is the implementation of the adopted Sandpoint Downtown Streets Plan and Design Guide. Phase 1 of the project will include reconstruction of Cedar Street from Fifth to Second Avenue; provide for wider 15 feet sidewalks with added landscaping, storm gardens, street furniture, places for art and lighting; and replace a sewer main on First Avenue from south of Lake to north of Church Street. Phase 1 also includes the conceptual design for stormwater treatment on Farmin’s Landing and improved pedestrian and bicycle access.
Public input on the design, project phasing, and streetscape preferences will be used to refine those concepts in preliminary design. The project will be constructed in phases to minimize impacts to the downtown businesses, community events and access to City Beach. The project team will work with the businesses in the downtown area throughout the project.
