Here's what's happening in July

**The Summer Nutrition Program for Kids offers free meals for children ages 1-18 Monday through Friday at several Sandpoint locations. At Farmin Elementary, the program runs June 15-August 28 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with Grab & Go meals that include lunch and breakfast for the next day, plus a weekend food bag provided on Fridays; meals can be picked up at the cafeteria entrance. At Sandpoint City Beach, Grab & Go lunches are available in the grassy area by the playground from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 29-August 28. At Sandpoint High School, lunch-only meals that must be eaten on site are served at the front left entrance from noon to 12:30 p.m. June 15-July 17. All sites will be closed July 3.

**WaterLife Discovery Center: Open to the public. Every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday this summer from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists invites you to the WaterLife Discovery Center, located at 1591 Lakeshore Drive in Sagle. This free experience features Naturalists on Duty ready to welcome the public to the cabin and grounds, though the grounds themselves remain open 24/7. Visitors of all ages can enjoy wonderful displays inside the cabin and on the deck, take a scenic nature walk across the road, or have a picnic on the grounds overlooking the lake. Families can bring the kids for fun scavenger hunts with prizes, view the very large rainbow trout in the pond, and explore a vibrant pollinator garden filled with milkweed to attract monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

3-9 Jowo Atisha's Lamp for the Path. Geshe Gendun Samdup, an exceptional Dharma teacher and the personal attendant to Serkong Rinpoche, will visit Sravasti Abbey to continue teaching Jowo Atisha’s "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment", a short and treasured text by the great Indian Master Jowo Atisha, who revived Buddhism in Tibet in the 11th century. In 68 pithy verses, it outlines the practices that culminate in full awakening and is the basis for the entire genre of lamrim (stages of the path) teachings. Je Tsongkhapa praises this text and its author as the source of his "Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path" (Lamrim Chenmo), which is practiced in the lineage of the Dalai Lama and at Sravasti Abbey. 7 Twist Wire Bracelets with Weezil. Join at the Sled Barn 11735 W. Pine St. from 6-8 p.m. and learn to use a simple twist method of combining wire to make your own copper bracelet. 7 Compassion Every Day. Join this weekly class from Tuesday, June 2 through Tuesday, September 8. at the Newport PUD Administration Building, 130 N. Washington Ave. in Newport from 6:30-8 p.m. Buddhist Nuns from Sravasti Abbey will guide this class offering practical ways to develop peace of mind through daily acts of kindness. It is based on the book "An Open-Hearted Life: Transformative Methods for Compassionate Living from a Clinical Psychologist and a Buddhist Nun," co-written by Buddhist teacher and author, Thubten Chodron, and Eastern Washington University professor and clinical psychologist, Russell Kolts. No registration required. Drop-ins are welcomed.

8 Citizen Science at Waterlife Discovery Center. Join representatives from the East Bonner County Library at the WaterLife Discovery Center, 1591 Lakeshore Drive in Sagle, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for hands on science and bird watching with the Master Naturalists. The Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists will have naturalists on duty from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to welcome the public to the inside of the cabin, deck and grounds. There are many exciting things for people of all ages to enjoy while at the WDC.

9 Thursday Story Explorers. Join at 10 a.m. at the Sandpoint Library Garden for a fun and engaging book club for 4th-6th graders. 1407 Cedar St. Through July 30.

9 Newport: Coffee in the Garden Demonstrations. Join at the CREATE Arts Center, 900 W. Fourth in Newport for free coffee and a demonstration by PO Fiber Arts for spinners of fleece and knitters. 10 a.m. to noon.

9 Rooted in Place: A Hands-on Herbal Experience. Create a pine whisk broom and herbal bundles with Suzanne Tabert, then create and enjoy a fresh salad. 10 SHS Dance Team Car Wash Fundraiser. Come get your car washed for a cause from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sandpoint Super 1 to help raise funds for the SHS Dance Team's National Dance Competition in California.

11 Nature Journaling with Watercolors with Amy Stephensen. Join at the Sled Barn, 11735 W. Pine St. and connect more deeply with the living world with nature journaling. 11 Pop-Up Quilt Sale & Boutique. Join from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 168 Wild Fawn Lane in Sagle. Find quilts, wall hangings, gifts, pottery, unique gift baskets and hand-made items for sale as a fundraiser for a local Relay For Life team "I-Did-It" A portion of all proceeds goes to he American Cancer Society.

11 Natural Connections. Spend a day of learning, creativity, and connection at the Sandpoint Library Garden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The morning begins at 10 a.m. with a Guided Song Circle led by Kelly McLean, open to all levels and focused on shared singing and community. At 11 a.m., Dr. Harvey Eckhart presents The Science of Joy: Why Laughter, Music, Movement & Connection Heal Us, an interactive workshop exploring how laughter, music, and movement support health and well-being. At 12:30 p.m., author Jane Fritz shares stories from her decades exploring Lake Pend Oreille by canoe in Lake Pend Oreille: Exploring a Wilderness of Water, highlighting the lake's natural beauty, history, and wildlife. The day concludes at 1:30 p.m. with Bowls for the Soul, a hands-on paper mache workshop with Holly Pennington where participants create a meaningful keepsake. 11 Harvesting The Bounty. After putting a lot of time and effort into successfully growing your crops, you want to make sure you are harvesting at the correct time for peak flavor and good storage. We will cover how to harvest all of the veggies in your garden and techniques for getting optimal yields for vegetables, herbs, cut flowers along with best practices for post-harvest handling to assure food safety guidelines are met. 11 Clark Fork: Bee Canvas Painting. From 2-5 p.m. meet up at the Clark Fork Library where you can crate your own bee canvas painting with an option to add it to the community hive display in the library for the month of July.

12 Turkey Wing Broom with Brad Huhta. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sled Barn, 11735 W. Pine St. you will learn to create a type of broom that involves a bit more work than the basic whisk broom. 16 Protecting North Idaho's Wildlands: An Introduction to the Idaho Panhandle Public Lands Initiative (IPPLI). Learn about the future of North Idaho's public lands at a community discussion hosted by the Idaho Conservation League at Evans Brothers Cafe, 524 Church St. from 6-7:30 p.m. Attendees will hear updates on the Idaho Panhandle Public Lands Initiative and proposed plans for the Selkirk Mountains and surrounding landscapes, with a focus on balancing conservation, recreation, restoration, and working forest values. The event offers an opportunity to connect with ICL staff, learn more about efforts to protect the region’s iconic public lands, and join the conversation about keeping them healthy, wild, and accessible for future generations.

19 Sharing the Dharma Day. Join the Buddhist nuns and monks at Sravasti Abbey Buddhist monastery, 692 Country Lane in Newport, for Sharing the Dharma Day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a day-long event for newcomers and old friends to explore Buddha's teachings to develop peaceful hearts and minds. The day includes a guided meditation, a teaching on the topic of the day, vegetarian potluck, and a facilitated discussion. 25-26 Torch Welded Art with Dave Gonzo. Join metal artist Dave Gonzo of Infinity Artistic Ironworks at 1019 Baldy Mountain Rd., in learning to draw with fire and metal in 3-D! Each student will be creating a piece of art for their garden, home or as a special gift. In this 2 day class, they will learn about and the use of the oxyacetylene torch. Join representatives from the East Bonner County Library at the WaterLife Discovery Center, 1591 Lakeshore Drive in Sagle, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for hands on science and bird watching with the Master Naturalists. The Pend Oreille Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists will have naturalists on duty from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to welcome the public to the inside of the cabin, deck and grounds. There are many exciting things for people of all ages to enjoy while at the WDC.

5 Egyptian Link Bracelet with Weezil. Join at the Sled Barn, 11735 W. Pine St. from 6-8 p.m. and learn from the talented wire bender, Weezil. Using recycled materials, students will bend and twist copper to make a beautiful bracelet. All tools and materials are provided. $35.
